On Monday 19 May, we were delighted to welcome Willmott Dixon to Holgate to deliver a careers workshop to our year 10 students. Willmott Dixon is the UK’s leading independent construction and property services company, delivering public and commercial projects with a local approach.

The workshop began with an introductory presentation from the Willmott Dixon team, followed by a quiz. Students were then set a practical challenge: working in pairs, they were asked to discuss and draw a plan for constructing a tower using only limited materials—cocktail sticks and jellybeans. Once the plans were completed, each pair swapped their design with a neighbouring group and attempted to build the tower using the other team’s plan—an interesting and exciting twist to the task.

Students worked well in their pairs and produced some exceptional towers. Their attention to detail and enthusiasm were evident throughout the practical element of the workshop. Well done to our students for their efforts, and a huge thank you to Willmott Dixon for visiting Holgate and delivering such an engaging workshop.
