On Monday 21 July, we were delighted to host our annual skills day for our year 10 students. We kicked off this special day with a welcome assembly hosted by Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts. Nicolle is a former student of The Holgate Academy and currently serves as Derbyshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, a role she has held since being elected in May 2024. It was the perfect start to the day.
We were extremely fortunate to welcome 13 amazing companies, all of which showcased their unique expertise. This gave our students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of skills throughout the day.
We had Ashfield District Council, who taught our students how to lay bricks—a vital skill in the construction industry. The British Army challenged our students to work independently in small groups to build the tallest freestanding tower using limited materials. The Academy Transformation Trust Further Education (ATTFE) College delivered workshops on hair and beauty, and our students were able to practise their hairdressing skills on two of their mannequin training heads—a fantastic addition to our skills day.
Other organisations that attended the event included the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Willmott Dixon, Hucknall Flight Museum, 3D Systems, Nottinghamshire Police, GXO, ITP Aero, West Nottinghamshire College, and Nottingham College.
Well done to all our year 10 students who attended the event. Your enthusiasm and fantastic behaviour were noted by many of our visitors. A huge thank you also to each and every guest who took the time to attend our skills day—the event could not have taken place without you.
