British Science Week is an annual 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths. To celebrate, we were delighted to welcome the Department of Civil Engineering from Nottingham Trent University on Monday 6 March. They delivered an exciting STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) workshop to our year 7 and 8 students.

The workshop was designed to promote STEM and give students an opportunity to learn about civil engineering. During the session, students took part in an exciting practical activity (developed by the ICE – Institute of Civil Engineers) where they were tasked with working in teams to produce a paper tube bridge using simple materials such as A3 and A4 paper, masking tape, nuts and bolts.

Once students finished constructing their bridges within the set time frame, they were challenged to test them to see how much weight they could hold before collapsing. The winning bridge during period 2’s workshop was Group F, which was able to hold an impressive 5kg before destruction. All teams produced some fantastic bridges, and it was a close competition between a number of groups.

Well done to all of our students for taking part in the workshops. You demonstrated excellent teamwork throughout, and your passion for science really stood out, especially during the practical element. A huge thank you also to the Department of Civil Engineering from Nottingham Trent University for visiting Holgate and delivering such an excellent workshop. It was especially nice that one of the trainers was former student and alumnus David Russhard.
