I attended Holgate from 2015–2020 and Hucknall Sixth Form Centre (now Holgate Sixth Form) from 2020–2022. Since then, I have gained a degree in creative writing from Leeds Arts University and have stayed in Leeds for further study. I am also a published poet, which is probably one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done. I’m very proud to say that, as of September 2026, I will be a fully qualified English teacher and will be working towards a master’s degree in inclusive and SEND education.

I have to admit, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to write this testimonial. I didn’t want to come across as self-centred or snobby, and I wasn’t sure about being seen across social media. Having now worked in schools across Yorkshire and undergone my teacher training, I felt I owed it to the incredible teachers who supported me at school to do this for them.
Firstly, I want to thank Miss Terrey for inspiring my love of English. She is one of the biggest reasons I became a teacher, so that I could share my passion and help others in the same way she helped me. To be honest, many of the techniques I use while teaching are ones she used when she taught me! I also want to thank Miss Elliott for being so kind and supportive towards me, especially during year 11. I’m very grateful to have been taught by her throughout my GCSEs and A-levels.
Next, I would like to thank Mr Randall, who was my tutor during year 11 (for a while!). He helped me so much with my anxiety and taught me more about maths than any other teacher ever had. Finally, thank you to Mr Brown for being such a helpful and lovely form tutor throughout year 13. I’m so thankful for all these teachers, and their brilliance should be recognised.
Having not sat my GCSEs (thanks, Covid…), I remember going to sixth form on my first day feeling very unprepared. Every teacher I encountered ensured that I knew how to apply for universities, how to secure an apprenticeship if I wanted one, and gave me a level of pastoral care that helped me through year 13 more than they probably realised. Thankfully, I left sixth form with strong A levels and the realisation that I can do anything I set my mind to.
