Our students answer your questions

Whether you are new to Holgate from an external secondary school or currently in year 11 with us, thinking about your further education options can be overwhelming. To help you weigh up your options, some of our students have answered your frequently asked questions to support you in making your decision as to whether our sixth form is the best choice for you.

Relationships with teachers

With fewer subjects studied in greater depth, staff get to know your individual interests, talents, and even your quirks. These stronger connections mean your teachers aren’t just educators — they also become mentors. You’ll feel confident approaching them for expertise, advice, and guidance, knowing the support you receive is built on trust and mutual respect.

Our facilities

At Holgate sixth form, you’ll experience the perfect balance between independence and support. You’re trusted to take responsibility for your own learning, with the freedom to shape how and where you study, while knowing staff are always there when you need guidance.

Our dedicated sixth form centre — designed with input from Holgate sixth formers themselves — gives you a space away from the rest of the academy. It includes a kitchenette, communal areas for collaboration and relaxation, quiet zones for focused study, and a large IT suite.

Research your subject choices

Before making your final decisions, take the time to find out exactly what each course covers and the type of work involved over the two years. Does the course include all the topics you’re hoping to study? Can you easily find the information you need on the website? To be sure you’re making the right decision, visit an open event or ask to speak directly with the lead staff. Taking these steps will give you confidence that the subjects you choose are a good fit for your interests, goals, and future pathways.

Be prepared to work hard

It’s well known that the leap from GCSE to A level is a big one — but if you’ve worked hard at GCSE, you’ll find the step-up much easier to manage. In many ways, it feels like an extension of what you’ve already studied, just explored in greater depth. Choosing subjects you genuinely enjoy and excel in will make this transition smoother and more rewarding. At the same time, it’s worth thinking ahead about your next steps. Consider the entry requirements for university courses, apprenticeships, or careers you may be interested in, and make sure your A level or Level 3 choices keep those routes open.

If you are looking to take up a new subject, speak with the teachers and current students during our open evening to find out how they found them and what their top tips would be.

Preparing you for the future

We place real emphasis on making sure you’re ready for life beyond sixth form. That means not only exploring all the options including university, apprenticeships, training, or employment, but also preparing you for the practical side of adulthood, such as managing your finances and living independently.

We don’t want any student to miss out on opportunities that will help them feel confident about their next steps. That’s why we provide dedicated guest speakers, workshops, and meaningful work experience placements, giving you practical insight and real-world preparation for whatever path you choose.
