Students at The Holgate Academy today celebrated as they collected their GCSE results – following a nervous wait amidst the significant changes announced to grade assessment.

Amongst a number of notable individual success stories was Lucy Bannister, who was celebrating following a strong set of results including five 9s, three 8s, and a grade 6. These impressive grades mean she will now go on to study English literature, film studies and sociology at Bilborough College. She said: “I’m extremely happy with my results and looking forward to moving on to college.”

Other excited students picking up their results included Harry Hemsley who achieved two 9 grades, four 8s, two 7s and a 6, and Kieran Martin who scored three 9 grades, two 8s, a 7 and two 6s. Harry said of his achievement: “I’m very happy with my results. I am now looking forward to starting at Hucknall Sixth Form Centre and studying physics, maths, photography and finance.”

Charlie Windmill was equally “thrilled” with her results, achieving a grade 9, two 8s, two 7s and four 5s. Charlie will also be progressing on to Hucknall Sixth Form Centre to study film, photography, English literature and criminology.

Mr Matthew Pennington, principal at The Holgate Academy said: “In a difficult year for our year 11 students, this cohort has demonstrated a dedicated attitude towards teaching and learning. Their grades reflect both their hard work and determination to succeed, supported by an enhanced programme of support we put in place across core subjects and a sustained approach to effective teaching strategies across the GCSE curriculum.

“This is a hugely important day for all our students, and whilst the year has not ended in a traditional manner, we are delighted that they will receive grades that recognise the work they have put in at Holgate. Many of these students will now continue their studies at our Hucknall Sixth Form Centre, together with other local colleges and apprenticeships. We wish them the very best for their future and congratulate them all today.”

Student numbers at Hucknall Sixth Form Centre are growing year-on-year, with the centre having an excellent reputation in Nottinghamshire and boasting a 100% pass rate this year. Paul Simpson, head of the centre added: “Students come to us from all over the county because of the high standards of teaching, quality outcomes for all students and our wide range of courses. We are still accepting applications from individuals to join us from September – our team would be delighted to show how the centre can enable all students to meet their aspirations and develop their continuing educational experience.”
