This week we received the excellent and exciting news that The Holgate Academy is now a ‘FairAware’ academy. The FairAware Award is run through the Fairtrade Foundation, a major driving force behind securing better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

By becoming a FairAware school, Holgate has demonstrated their commitment to teaching our students, through the geography curriculum and personal development opportunities, about the work of FairTrade. Mrs Sifontes had to submit a pack information to showcase how we do this, and following a positive assessment we are delighted to receive this award. As part of the process, we have been asking students to find out which Fairtrade products we use around the academy already, together with suggesting other areas in which we could make changes to include these products.

The next step is for the academy to work towards our FairActive Award. This will involve students supporting the work of Fairtrade around our academy, making a real difference in our community – we are excited to start this process over the coming months.

Thank you to all students and staff who supported Mrs Sifontes in gathering the information required for this award, and well done to Mrs S for her drive in making this happen. A great achievement.
