Last week, two small groups of year 10 and year 11 students visited GCL Food Ingredients as part of their GCSE food and nutrition course. The aim was to provide them with a deeper insight into what it’s like to work within the food industry.

The students were taught how the entire process works, from receiving a brief from one of their customers to how the products are delivered to the end customer. This was followed by a factory tour where they observed the full production line process. The day also included a practical session in which the students made their own meatballs during a ‘meatball masterclass’ led by their very own meat expert, Pep Malacarne. Pep has worked in the food industry for over 25 years and has extensive experience in creating the perfect product.

The heads of departments and various experienced colleagues also joined the session to speak to the students about the importance of every department working together to ensure that products are delivered on time and to the highest standards.

Additionally, the students participated in a lesson on organoleptic testing, led by Head of NPD, Daniel West. During this hands-on activity, the students had the opportunity to sample some of the company’s best-selling products and share their feedback. Daniel also took the time to explain the crucial role that testing plays in product development, ensuring every bite meets the highest standards of quality and taste.

Our students demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout both trips, and feedback from GCL Food Ingredients was extremely positive. Comments like “Your students did a fantastic job” and “Your students should be very proud of themselves” further confirms that our students made us proud.
