World Book Day is always a special day at Holgate, and this year was no exception. We hosted several exciting activities throughout the day, which our students thoroughly enjoyed.
We kicked off our celebrations the day prior with our ‘Bookish’ event held in the library. This was an after-school club that explored all things book-related and prompted lively discussions among our students. A perfect start to the festivities!
On the day itself, we hosted several activities, ranging from a whole-school serialised story (our fourth one) to our teachers dressing up as characters from their favourite books. This year’s serialised book was ‘The Ice Bear’ by British multi-award-winning illustrator and author Jackie Morris, and it was featured at the start of all lessons that day. ‘The Ice Bear’ tells the mysterious journeys of a bear cub and explores the relationship between humans and the natural world, variations of family life, memories, and the unexpected ways in which we can live and learn together.

In addition, we issued free book tokens to our students so they could grab a book from a designated retailer at a later date. Our English faculty also ran a photography competition in which our students were tasked with reading in an unusual place. Our winner was Aida from year 7, whose photo showed her reading immersed in nature, positioned up a tree. What an incredible place to read and what a fabulous photo – a big well done to Aida!
