Reflecting on my time at The Holgate Academy and sixth form, I am filled with gratitude and fond memories that have significantly shaped my personal and professional journey.
The staff at Holgate played a crucial role in nurturing my sense of adventure and curiosity, particularly through the ski and science trips they organised. These experiences not only fuelled my determination but also laid the foundation for my pursuit of a career in science and technology.

After my time at Holgate, I went on to attend Keele University, where I earned a BSc in Biology. During my studies, I was actively involved in the university’s rugby team, holding a committee position and being honoured with an award for my dedication to training and developing players. This experience taught me the value of teamwork and leadership—skills that have been invaluable throughout my career.
Following my undergraduate studies, I pursued an MSc in Bioinformatics at the University of Nottingham. This advanced degree opened doors to a role at the Animal and Plant Health Agency, where I worked in biosecurity. My responsibilities included securing the UK’s borders from foreign pests and collaborating with officers at major ports, such as Heathrow, to address the improper importation of plant products. This role was a testament to my commitment to protecting both the environment and public health.
Despite being offered a promotion within the agency, I chose to explore new horizons by transferring to the Cabinet Office to undertake a higher apprenticeship in cybersecurity. This decision was driven by my passion for continuous learning and adapting to new challenges. I now hold several certifications in cybersecurity and eagerly anticipate my next role in this dynamic industry.
The lessons I learned at Holgate have been pivotal in my life. They taught me the importance of resilience, continuous learning, and the courage to explore new opportunities. These values have not only influenced my career but have also prepared me to thrive in a world that is constantly evolving and open to paradigm shifts.
My journey from Holgate to where I am today is a testament to the strong foundation I received there, and I am grateful for the experiences and education that have guided me along the way.
