My name is Austin Poole, and I attended The Holgate Academy from 2018 to 2023, which I then followed by going to the Hucknall Sixth Form Centre from 2023 to 2025.
The lessons and people I met during my time at Holgate have shaped the person I am today. The support I received from the staff at Holgate helped to build not only academic results, but also character and determination—qualities that have encouraged me to strive for self-improvement in every aspect of my life.
Like many students, the transition from primary to secondary school was daunting, but my new teachers quickly made me feel at ease, and my love for the sciences developed immediately. I found myself looking forward to going to school so that I could learn about different scientific principles—and, of course, take part in as many practical experiments as possible. The things I learned in my lessons broadened my understanding of the world and the people around me.
With the impact of COVID, I felt a deeper connection to the school and those around me, as the uncertain times for both staff and pupils created a shared attitude of resilience. We worked together to adapt to the restrictions that came with multiple lockdowns and periods of isolation.
The wide range of lessons and experiences I had at Holgate made it difficult to decide what I wanted to do when I left, as the possibilities felt endless. Near the end of my time at Holgate, I was still unsure of my next steps, so I took a part-time job at the Co-operative store. There, I gained valuable experience working with the public and met many amazing people.
As the end of sixth form approached, I finally realised that I wanted to work in education. One of my favourite teachers—who also happened to be my tutor—approached me about an opportunity that was coming up and recommended I apply, as she knew what I was passionate about and believed I’d be a great fit. I instantly knew this was a career path I would be proud and happy to pursue.
Even though my time as a student at Holgate has officially ended, I’m certain I’ll continue to learn and grow. I look forward to seeing where this next phase—as an apprentice science technician—takes me.
