Rob Ogelsby

Over a year ago, I was first invited to write an article for the Holgate alumni community. At the time, I hesitated—mainly because I worried it might come across as self-centred. But after a recent visit to the year 6 open evening, I realised that this story isn’t about me at all. It’s about the people and the place that helped shape the person I’ve become.

I’m now 39 and in my eighteenth year of teaching mathematics. Growing up in an underprivileged background, I hadn’t encountered many opportunities before attending Holgate. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that Holgate was different. I was never treated as just another statistic; the staff were determined that every student would have the chance to reach their potential.

Two teachers, in particular, left a lasting mark on me. Mr Richie Blackmore, my maths teacher from year 7 through to year 11, inspired a love of the subject that I carry into my own classroom today.

Many of the techniques I now use with my own students are ones I first learned from him. At the time, I didn’t fully appreciate his influence, but looking back, he played a huge role in my decision to become a maths teacher.

I also owe thanks to Mr Rich Ellis, who introduced me to sports leadership when I started PE in year 10. That opportunity opened doors I could never have imagined, including two summers working in America. Those experiences built confidence and skills that continue to serve me every day in the classroom.

After completing my A levels, I took a year out to work. Even then, the sixth form staff supported me as I applied for university—a level of care that extended well beyond the school gates. Later, I was fortunate to return to Holgate for the first four years of my own teaching career. Being welcomed back by so many familiar faces made those early years of teaching both rewarding and inspiring.

Of course, many factors shape a life, but the staff at Holgate played an especially significant part in mine. For their belief, encouragement, and guidance, I will always be profoundly grateful.
