Wayne Sellers

I attended The Holgate Academy and sixth form from 2000 to 2008, and I look back on my time there with great fondness. Although I wasn’t the most academic student when I started secondary school, the dedication and care shown by many of the Holgate staff helped nurture my potential and inspire my growth – both academically and personally.

Teachers like Mr Endy and Mr Day stood out for their personable and supportive approach, while the admin and pastoral teams were always welcoming and encouraging. The relationships I formed and the support I received at Holgate had a lasting impact and helped shape the path I’ve taken since.

After completing sixth form, I went on to study history at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). I later trained as a teaching assistant before returning to NTU to complete my teacher training. Since then, I’ve worked as a class teacher and PE coordinator for seven years, and I have recently taken on the role of phase lead at Beardall Fields Primary and Nursery School in Hucknall. This position involves leading a team of staff, driving school improvement initiatives, and overseeing the progress and safeguarding of over 120 pupils.

I often find myself modelling my teaching style on those who inspired me at Holgate – it was there that I first realised teaching was the vocation for me. I genuinely couldn’t imagine doing anything else, and I’m incredibly grateful to all the teachers and support staff who believed in me and guided me along the way.

Thank you, Holgate, for helping me become who I am today.
