Key stage 3

Physical education (PE) is delivered to all students as part of the core curriculum. Students in all year groups have two lessons of practical core PE per week and can then choose BTEC Sport as one of their options in year 10. By choosing this as an option they will then receive an additional three lessons per week of PE which will be a mixture of both practical and theory lessons.

The subject aims to teach the students to use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games, develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports and analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Aims of the subject

Physical education aims to ensure that all students:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Students study the same activities in years 7 to 9 as this gives them the opportunity to show a greater level of progression in their tactical awareness, knowledge of the rules and skill level in each of the activities.
