Key stage 4

Media studies is an optional subject at year 10 only.

Why study media studies?

Step into one of the most creative, fast-moving and influential industries in the world. Media isn’t just something we watch or scroll through — it shapes the way we think, communicate and understand society.

By choosing media studies, you’ll develop the ability to analyse the media you consume every day, from films and TV dramas to social media, advertising and music videos. You’ll learn how media messages are crafted, why they matter and how they influence real-world opinions and decisions.

This subject is hands-on, imaginative and intellectually stimulating. If you enjoy English, love being creative or want to understand the power behind the media you use daily, media studies is the perfect fit.

What will I learn?

Throughout the course, you’ll become a confident, insightful and creative communicator. You will:

  • explore the meaning behind media content and how it represents people, places and ideas
  • investigate how media industries operate and how audiences respond
  • learn how different types of media are produced
  • develop your own media products, using real techniques used in the film, advertising and digital industries

By the end, you’ll have a strong understanding of modern media culture — and the practical skills to create impressive work of your own
